Softball Wins aTen Construction Tournament Opener 6-1 Over Minnesota

Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside softball team opened the aTen Construction Tournament on Friday with a 6-1 win over Minnesota at Amy S. Harrison Field.
UCR pitcher Jordyn McDonald allowed one Gopher run in the first inning, but that was all the scoring Minnesota would get the rest of the way. McDonald picked up her first win of the season, giving up just four hits and walking just two while striking out seven.
The Highlanders offense started early as they scored two runs in the first, quickly retaking the lead 2-1. Dionne Anderson singled to right field and stole second, then advanced to third on a passed ball. Alexis Pickett's single brought Anderson home, and a Brittany Keeney triple at the next at bat scored Pickett.
In the third, UCR opened up the game by scoring three runs on three hits and two errors, all with two outs gone by in the inning.
The Highlanders added a single insurance run in the fifth inning off another Minnesota error, taking a 6-1 lead.
For the game, Kayla White recorded three hits to pace the Highlanders, while Kameryn Hebenton had two RBI.
Minnesota's Sara Moulton was saddled with the loss, giving up five runs and six hits in 3.0 innings of work.
The aTen Construction Tournament continues on Saturday with an 11:30 am game against Rutgers.
