White's RBI Double In 6th Lifts Highlanders To 6-5 Win Over Rutgers

Riverside, CA - Kayla White's RBI double in the bottom of the sixth inning proved to be the game winner for the UC Riverside softball team in a 6-5 victory over Rutgers on Saturday afternoon at Amy S. Harrison Field.
The Highlanders (3-4) had a 5-2 lead going into the top of the sixth inning, but a three-run home run by Mikelyn Messina evened up the ball game.
With one out in the bottom of the sixth, Jojo Mendoza singled to left field and was pinch run for by Alexis Villamor. Ariel Shore's bunt advanced the runner to second, and White's double allowed Villamor to come home as the winning run.
The Scarlet Knights (0-3) scored the first run of the game in the first inning, but UCR got those runs back in the second inning scoring three runs on two hits and one error.
Kameryn Hebenton led off with a hit-by-pitch, and later stole second. Taylor Thomas was walked to put runners at first and second, and then with one out, Mendoza singled to plate the first run.
A wild pitch by Rutger's pitcher advanced Thomas and Mendoza one base, and with two outs, White's single to center field scored both runners to put UCR up 3-1.
The Scarlet Knights cut the lead to one with a solo run in the top of the third, but the Highlanders again responded by scoring two runs in their respective half inning.
Alexis Pickett led off with a double, and was brought home two batters later by Hebenton's double. With two outs, Jessica Vasser singled to right center field to score the remaining run and put UCR on top 5-2.
Amy Lwin pitched a complete game for the Highlanders, picking up her second win of the season. Noelle Sisco was saddled with the loss for Rutgers.
UC Riverside concludes the aTen Construction Tournament with two games on Sunday, February 20 at Amy S. Harrison Field in Riverside.
