Box Score - UC Riverside 3, North Dakota 1
Riverside, CA - Jordyn McDonald pitched a one-hitter for the UC Riverside softball team on Sunday and the Highlanders offense added three runs for a 3-1 victory over North Dakota to conclude the UCR Tournament at Amy S. Harrison Field.
UND (4-13) threatened in the second inning as they had runners at second and third with one out. McDonald got Brittany Baker to strike out and Amanda Johnson to ground out to end the inning.
The Highlanders (6-15) had runners at second and third with no outs in the bottom of the second, but could not convert a run as Alexis Pickett struck out, Brittany Keeney was thrown out at home, and Nicole Carter struck out as well.
The Fighting Sioux were the first to plate a run as they scored in the top of the fourth inning on Caralyn Chewning's solo home run.
UC Riverside responded in the bottom half of that inning with three runs. Kameryn Hebenton and Keeney singled to lead off, and Taylor Thomas drew an intentional walk to load the bases. With one out, a wild pitch by UND's Michelle Frank tied the game as all runners advanced a base.
Carter was issued a walk to again load the bases, and Jessica Vasser's sac fly scored Keeney for the go-ahead run. A second wild pitch by Frank gave UCR a 3-1 lead as Thomas came home for the score.
McDonald retired the Sioux batters in order in the fifth and sixth innings, but in the seventh, North Dakota made one final push. With two outs, a single and a walk put runners at first and second, but McDonald got Amanda Johnson to strike out to end the inning.
McDonald earned the win for the Highlanders pitching a complete game while walking just four. Frank took the loss for the Sioux.
Keeney led UCR with two hits on the day, while four others added one apiece.
UC Riverside returns to action on the road on Sunday, March 20 at CSU Bakersfield for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm.
