Gauchos Take Doubleheader 3-0 And 7-5 From UC Riverside Softball

Santa Barbara, CA - The UC Riverside softball team (9-24, 2-6) lost a doubleheader 3-0 and 7-5 to UC Santa Barbara on Saturday afternoon at the Campus Diamond in Big West Conference action.
Gauchos (22-18, 6-2) pitcher Krista Cobb pitched a no-hitter in game one and walked just two batters to earn the win. UCR was shutout for the first time in 14 games and just the third time this season.
UCSB got all the runs it would need in the third inning as one run came home with a bases-loaded walk in the third. The Gauchos added two more in the fifth, and the Highlanders were retired in order in the last three innings for a UCSB win.
Jordyn McDonald was saddled with the loss for UC Riverside, allowing just one earned run to score while tying her personal-best with seven strike outs.
In game two, UCSB touched UCR started Casey Suda for seven runs in three innings, although only one run was earned due to six Highlanders errors during that time.
UCR mounted a comeback later in the game, scoring one run each in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings, and two runs in the fifth.
In the fourth, Brittany Keeney came home on Taylor Thomas' RBI ground out to third base to cut the lead to 7-1. In the next inning, a bases loaded single by Kayla White scored Brooke Hebenton, and Jessica Vasser drew a RBI walk in the next at bat that scored Kameryn Hebenton to make it a 7-3 game.
With Coco Villamor at third and two outs in the sixth, B. Hebenton singled to the shortstop bringing Villamor home to further cut the lead to 7-4.
Keeney continued the Highlanders scoring rally with a solo home run over the center field fence in the seventh inning to make it a 7-5 ballgame. However, three consecutive outs concluded the game and UC Santa Barbara held on for the win.
Suda took the loss for UCR, pitching four innings and giving up nine hits. Amy Lwin relieved Suda for the last two innings, and gave up just one hit during that time.
The three-game series between the teams concludes on Sunday at 12:00 pm in Santa Barbara, CA.
