UC Riverside Softball Splits Doubleheader With Cal State Fullerton

Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside softball team returned to Big West Conference play on Saturday by splitting a doubleheader against Cal State Fullerton at Amy S.Harrison Field.
The Highlanders (9-21, 2-3) won game one 4-3 thanks to Kameryn Hebenton's game-winning hit in the bottom of the seventh, but the team fell in game two 6-1.
In game one, consecutive singles from the Titans' (14-17, 3-2) Torrie Anderson and Ari Cervantes led off the second inning. UCR pitcher Jordan McDonald got the next two batters out, but Adri Martinez singled into the outfield, scoring both runners for a 2-0 lead.
Hebenton and Brittany Keeney hit back-to-back solo home runs in almost the identical spot out in right field in the bottom of the fourth inning, tying the game at 2-2. It was the first home runs of the season for both Hebenton and Keeney.
In the sixth, CSF took a 3-2 lead as pinch runner Jena Rubio came home from third after Tish Dedeaux reached on an error by Hebenton.
The Highlanders scored the equalizer in the bottom of that inning, however. Keeney doubled to lead off the inning, and was sacrificed to third by Jessica Vasser. Taylor Thomas then reached on a fielder's choice, and the throw was not in time as Keeney touched home plate tying the game at three.
The Titans threatened in the seventh as they had runners at first and second one with out, but McDonald got Nicole Johnson to pop up and Anderson to foul out ending the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, Kayla White reached on an error by the Titan's third baseman. After advancing to second on Ariel Shore's sac but, Hebenton singled to right center and White came home for the game-winning run.
McDonald earned the win for UCR, allowing just three earned runs while walking none in seven innings of work. Cervantes picked up the loss for Fullerton, giving up four runs in 6.1 innings of action.
Game two was a pitcher's dual through the first three innings as neither team could string together enough hits to score a run.
With runners at second and third for the Titans in the fourth, however, Lauren Mario belted a two-out shot over the left field fence, giving Cal State Fullerton a 3-0 lead. CSF added two more in the sixth, and a solo home run in the seventh to go up 6-0.
The Highlanders avoided being shutout in the bottom of the seventh as Vasser hit a solo home run over the centerfield fence.
UCR then rallied as Alexis Pickett's double scored pinch runner Coco Villamor from second, and Nicole Carter's RBI ground out allowed Brooke Hebenton to score from third to cut the lead to 6-3.
However, it was too little too late for UCR, as a ground out ended the inning and put a stop to the Highlanders late rally.
Casey Suda took the loss for the Highlanders, allowing five runs in six innings of work. Katey Laban earned the win for Cal State Fullerton, tossing a complete game and giving up just four hits.
The Highlanders and Titans conclude their three-game series on Sunday with first pitch slated for noon at Amy S. Harrison Field in Riverside.
