Riverside—A record crowd of 2.016 fans watched the UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team upset seventh ranked UC Santa Barbara 3-1 Wednesday evening at the UCR Soccer Stadium. (Box Score)
The record attendance smashed the previous benchmark set on November 3, 2010 when 638 fans attended the Highlanders 1-0 win over UC Davis.
It didn't take long for the Highlanders to get the crowd on its feat as Cesar Diaz Pizarro's header from just in front of the goal in the 11th minute put UC Riverside (6-2-1, 1-0-0) up 1-0. Alex Racca picked up his first assist of the season on the play as he was taking part in just his third match of the season after missing the first six with an injury.
The Gauchos (6-2-1, 0-1-0) countered less than seven minutes later as David Opoku tied the match at one with 16:54 gone in the first period.
The team's entered the half still even at one. Aaron Long gave the Highlanders the lead again in the 59th minute of play thanks in part to a miss step by Gauchos keeper Andre Grandt. Long struck the ball along the turf from dead center of the goal, 25 yards out and as Grandt dove to make the stop, the ball took a high hop bouncing off of his hand and into the back of the net.
Richie Osborne ended the scoring in the 69th minute thanks to Racca's second assist of the evening, driving down the left side on a breakway, and beating Grandt to the lower left side of the goal.
The victory was just the third in UC Riverside's Division I history over a ranked opponent, and puts the Highlanders four games above .500 for the first time in the Division I history of the program.
UC Riverside also ran its unbeaten streak to six matches with the victory extending what was already a Division I-era program best.
UC Santa Barbara had allowed seven goals in eight matches prior to giving up three to the Highlanders. The Gauchos also recorded five shutouts in their previous six matches prior to the loss to UC Riverside.
