Second Half Run By Pacific Lifts Them Past Highlanders, 80-59

Riverside, CA—The UC Riverside women's basketball team was down by just one point at the half, but Pacific outscored them by 20 points in the second period as the Highlanders dropped their sixth straight game, 80-59, to the Tigers on Saturday evening in Big West Conference play.
The Highlanders(2-13, 0-4) quickly fell behind to open the second half as Pacific (8-6, 2-1) went on a 20-2 run within the first seven minutes of play.
UC Riverside had trailed by just one, 35-34 at the half, but started the second period without the services of leading scorer Tre'Shonti Nottingham due to an injury she suffered in the first period.
The Tigers used full-court defensive pressure to produce eight UCR turnovers during that span as they went up by 19, 55-36, with 12:43 left in the game.
The Highlanders cut the lead to 13 following two Kiara Harewood free throws, 59-46, with 9:38 left in regulation. However, that was as close as they would get the rest of the way as Pacific went back up by 21, 80-59, to conclude the game.
In the first half of play, Brittany Palmer led the Highlanders with 12 points as the team turned an 8-8 tie into a 15-8 advantage with 13:17 left in the half. The Tigers countered with a run of their own, scoring 12 straight to go up 20-15 at the 9:12 mark.
The teams' battled back and forth with UCR eventually tying the game at 25, and taking a three-point lead, 34-31, with 49 seconds left in the half.
Two free throws by Ashley Smith put the Tigers within one, 34-33, with 32 seconds remaining, and a bucket at the buzzer for Ashley Wakefield lifted Pacific to a 35-34 lead entering the break.
Jessica Ogunnorin had a double-double for UC Riverside with 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Palmer added 12 points and Dynese Adams had nine. Wakefield led all players with 17 points for Pacific.
The Tigers outshot the Highlanders 42.3 percent (30-71) to 35.6 percent (21-59) for the game, and scored 44 points in the paint compared to just 28 for UCR.
The Highlanders now continue Big West play with road contests at Cal Poly on January 12, and at UC Santa Barbara on January 14.
