UCR Softball Drops Opening Games Of Slugger Desert Classic

Henderson, NV - The UC Riverside softball team opened play at the UNLV Louisville Slugger Desert Classic on Friday afternoon with losses to Hawai'i, 8-0 in five innings, and Utah State, 5-1.
Hawai'i started game one by scoring six runs in the bottom of the first inning, and adding two more in the third.
UCR had just four hits on the day as the game ended in the fifth due to the eight-run rule. Taylor Alvarez was saddled with the loss, allowing nine hits and seven earned runs in 3.0 innings of work.
Stephanie Ricketts earned the win for the Wahine.
Utah State opened game two with five runs through the first two innings. The 5-0 score stayed the same until the bottom of the sixth when the Highlanders put one run across to make it 5-1.
UCR recorded two hits in the seventh inning, but could not plate another run as USU held on for the victory.
Jordyn McDonald took the loss for the Highlanders, pitching all seven innings. Mandy Harmon picked up the win for the Aggies.
UC Riverside continues play at the Slugger Desert Classic on Saturday with games against top-ranked Cal at 11:15 am, and San Jose State at 1:30 pm.
