Box Score - UC Riverside 9, UIC 1 (5 innings)
Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside softball team (2-9) made a statement in its opening game of the aTen Construction Tournament on Friday afternoon, defeating UIC (5-7) by a score of 9-1 in a mercy-rule shortened five-innings.
Brittany Keeney staked the Highlanders to an early 1-0 lead in the first as she floated a ball over the left center field fence for her first home run of the season. UCR added a solo run in the second as Kayla White led off with a walk and eventually came home on an Alexis Pickett single.
The next inning, Keeney came through with another RBI as her single to right field scored Ariel Shore from second base, making in 3-0. Three batters later, Kaylie Atkinson singled down the left field line, allowing Keeney to score from second and increasing the lead to 4-0.
The Flames got one run back in the top of the fourth inning, scoring on an error from UCR's catcher Pickett.
UC Riverside continued its scoring in the bottom of that frame, however, putting a three-spot on the board while batting around the order.
With one out, Dionne Anderson started the rally as she reached base safely after being hit by a pitch. A single from Shore made it first and second, and Keeney was then walked to load the bases. Jessica Vasser then drew a walk, garnering an RBI as Anderson touched home plate.
That prompted a pitching change from UIC as Devin Miller entered the circle. Miller didn't have much luck either, as White singled to the pitcher, and all runners advanced with Shore scoring for a 6-1 lead.
Atkinson reached on a fielder's choice in the next at-bat, and the Flames' first baseman overthrew the ball to home plate as Keeney safely scored giving UCR a 7-1 advantage.
In the fifth inning, the Highlanders scored two additional runs as the game ended on Vasser's double to center field.
Keeney went 2-for-3 from the plate while scoring four runs and recording two RBI. Shore picked up two hits for the Highlanders, while five others garnered a hit each.
Jordyn McDonald pitched all five innings for UCR, earning her first win of the season.
The Highlanders continue the aTen Construction Tournament on Saturday with games against Idaho State and South Dakota at 11:30 am and 2:00 pm respectively at Amy S. Harrison Field in Riverside.
