Box Score - Loyola Marymount 7, UC Riverside 6 (8 innings)
Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside softball team concluded play at the Amy S. Harrison Classic on Sunday with losses to Quinnipiac, 3-2, and to Loyola Marymount, 7-6, in eight innings.
In the first game, the Highlanders found themselves in a 3-0 hole after three innings of play. Jordan Paolucci homered off UCR starter Amy Lwin to give Quinnipiac a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, the Bobcats strung together a double and a single, as another run came home.
UC Riverside committed three errors in the third, but got out of a bases-loaded jam with only one run coming across.
The Highlanders finally found their offense in the bottom of the fourth, as Dionne Anderson singled to lead off the frame, and scored on Yesenia Duenas' RBI single.
UCR added another run in the fifth to cut the lead to 3-2. Jojo Mendoza drew a walk to lead off the inning, and was replaced on the basepaths by Halle Luna. Anderson then doubled to right center, allowing Luna to score.
Meanwhile, Lwin gave way to Casey Suda in the circle, and Suda retired her first six batters in order, and had just one baserunner in the seventh.
UC Riverside looked to tie the game, but could not convert on a runner at second base in the sixth. In the seventh, Kayla White led off with a singe, but again was stranded at second as the Bobcats held on for the 3-2 win.
Against Loyola Marymount in the second game of the day, the Highlanders got on board in the first inning for a 1-0 lead. White singled to lead off, and advanced to second on Anderson's sac bunt.
Brittany Keeney then laced a single to left field, picking up the RBI as White touched home plate.
The Lions tied the game an inning later with a single run, but the Highlanders got that run back in their respective second. With one out, Halle Luna singled and reached second on an error. After another out, White's second single of the day score Luna for the 2-1 advantage.
White went 3-for-3 in the fifth as she blasted an offering from Lions pitcher Dana Waldusky and lifted it over the right centerfield fence to put UCR on top 3-1.
After a pitching change, the Highlanders would load the bases that same inning, and Jordyn McDonald was credited with an RBI as she drew a walk. Shavon Bates then pinch-hit, and came through with an RBI single to right field as the Highlanders took a 5-1 lead.
Loyola Marymount countered with a solo run in the top of the sixth, and tied the game with a three-spot in the seventh. With one out, the Lions hit three singles and a double to plate those three runs.
Duenas doubled to lead off the bottom of the seventh for UCR, but was tagged out in a rundown on McDonald's fielder's choice, as the Highlanders failed to convert the game-winning run.
in extra innings, Brittany Pereda hit a two-RBI home run over the left field fence to lift LMU to a 7-5 lead. Two more singles followed the home run, but the Highlanders got out of the inning without another run scoring.
UC Riverside plated one run in its respective eighth, but could not force that tying run across as the Lions completed the 7-6 come-from-behind victory.
The Highlanders now break for finals week before returning to host the UCR Tournament beginning on Friday, March 23 at Amy S. Harrison Field in Riverside.
