Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside softball team lost a Big West Conference doubleheader to UC Santa Barbara on Saturday afternoon, 11-1 and 6-3, at Amy S. Harrison Field.
The Gauchos (20-25, 5-3) scored a single run in the top of the first, and Shelby Wisdom hit a two-RBI home run the next inning to put UCSB on top, 3-0. In the fifth, UC Santa Barbara put up a four-spot, and added another four runs in the top of the seventh as the lead grew to 11-0.
Meanwhile, the Highlanders (18-22, 1-7) were held scoreless until the seventh inning, stranding seven runners on base. In the seventh, UCR got one run back as Alexis Pickett's RBI single to left field plated Alaina Thomas from third.
The Highlanders would leave three runners on base to end the frame as UCSB picked up the 11-1 victory.
Wisdom earned the win for the Gauchos in the circle, striking out seven while walking just one in six innings of work. UCR pitcher Jordyn McDonald suffered the loss, allowing six earned runs in 5.0 innings.
In the nightcap, Brittany Keeney hit a solo home run for the Highlanders in the bottom of the second, putting UCR up 1-0. With two outs and the bases loaded in the same inning, Ariel Shore laced a single to left field, picking up the RBI as Yesenia Duenas came around to score for the 2-0 lead.
With one out in the top of the fourth, UCR starting pitcher Taylor Alvarez walked four straight batters, and five of six, to walk in two runs, tying the game at 2-2. An inning later, the Gauchos tacked on three more runs as their lead grew to 5-2.
UCSB plated an additional run in the seventh to go up 6-2, but the Highlanders made it interesting in their half of the frame, loading the bases.
Thomas led off by reaching on an error, and moved to third after singles by Kayla White and Shore.
Down to their last out, the Highlanders scored one after UCSB pitcher Wisdom threw a wild pitch. UCR had the tying run at the plate, but could not put an additional run across as the Gauchos held on for the 6-3 win.
Alvarez picked up the loss for UCR, while Wisdom earned her second win of the day for UCSB.
The Highlanders complete the three-game series against the Gauchos with a single game on Sunday beginning at 12:00 pm at Amy S. Harrison Field.
