Box Score - UC Riverside 2, Cal Poly 1
San Luis Obispo, CA - The UC Riverside softball team closed out the regular season on Saturday afternoon with a 2-1 Big West Conference victory at Cal Poly.
The Highlanders conclude the year with a 25-28 overall record and an 8-13 mark in league play, tying for fifth in the conference standings. The 25 wins set the program's Division I record for most wins in a season, while the eight victories in Big West play do the same.
Jessica Vasser staked UCR to a 1-0 lead in the first inning driving home Brittany Keeney from second base following her one-out walk. Jojo Mendoza put the Highlanders up 2-0 in the fourth as she hit a solo home run to left center field.
Meanwhile, Casey Suda was able to get out of jams in the first four innings as the Mustangs left a combined five runners on base. In the fifth, however, Cal Poly was able to get one across as a two-out single from Kim Westlund scored Nora Sobczak, cutting UCR's lead to 2-1.
Amy Lwin replaced Suda in the circle to start the sixth inning, and got out of a bases-loaded jam to hold the lead. A lead-off walk and a ground out for the Mustangs in the seventh put the tying run in scoring position, but the Highlanders were able to get a fly out and a pop up to end the frame and the game, holding on for the 2-1 victory.
Suda earned the win for UC Riverside allowing five hits and the one run, while Lwin was credited with the save. Jordan Yates was saddled with the loss for Cal Poly.
Mendoza ended up going 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI, while Kayla White went 2-for-3.
