Men's Soccer Bounces Back With 3-2 Overtime Win Over Cal Poly
9/30/2012 4:17:00 PM | Men's Soccer
Riverside—Otis Earle helped the UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team bounce back from Friday's 3-1 loss to #3 UC Santa Barbara scoring with 46 seconds gone in the first overtime period to give the Highlanders a 3-2 victory over visiting Cal Poly. The win ended UCR's two-match losing streak, and also put a stop to a six-match slide against the Mustangs. (Box Score)
Cal Poly (6-4-0, 1-1-0) jumped out to a 1-0 lead with just 6:21 gone in the match when Chris Gaschen drove the ball into the left corner and found George Malki alone in the box for the first score of the day. It didn't take the Highlanders long to counter, though, as Hayden Leslie got his head on an Eric Gonzalez corner kick 44 seconds later to tie the match at one.
With 5:58 to go before intermission, Dakota Collins found Kip Colvey running down the left side. UCR keeper Ashkan Khosravi made a diving stop of Colvey's shot, but was unable to secure the ball, and Matt LaGrassa was there for the put back.
UC Riverside (8-2-0, 1-1-0) tied the match at two with 6:56 gone in the second period when Jose Diaz headed Hayden Leslie's throw in towards the Mustangs' goal, and Jimmy Martinez was there for the "smash and grab."
Neither team was able to find the back of the net in regulation, but the Highlanders didn't waste any time in the extra period as Ulises Mosqueda found Juan Mendoza streaking down the middle of the field with a through pass off of his right heal. Otis Earle broke towards the goal from his left forward position, and Mendoza hit him in stride inside Cal Poly's defensive 18. It only took one touch for Earle to slot the ball past the Mustangs keeper, sending the Highlanders home happy.
UC Riverside hits the road this weekend as they travel to UC Davis on Friday, October 5 for a 4 pm PT match against the Aggies, and to Sacramento State for a Sunday, October 7 tilt against the Thunderbirds which kicks off at 1 pm.
