1/3/2013 6:11:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Box Score—Cal State Northridge 65, UC Riverside 49
Riverside—The UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team was unable to rally back from its first-half deficit Thursday evening, falling in its Big West Conference opener, 65-49, to Cal State Northridge. The Highlanders fall to 7-5 overall, 0-1 in league play, while the Matadors improve to 7-5, 1-0.
UCR trailed by just six points at the half, but a 20-4 run by CSUN to start the second half proved fatal for the Highlanders. UC Riverside never got closer than 16 points the rest of the way as the Matadors had the win in hand.
Brittany Crain was the high scorer for UCR with 15 points, while Natasha Hadley put up nine, and Tre'Shonti Nottingham had eight. Two players scored in double-figures for Cal State Northridge, led by 13 from Camille Mahlnecht and 11 from Marta Masoni.
The Highlanders kept the game close in the first half, never trailing by more than five, until they hit the eight minute mark. Cal State Northridge began their hot streak with a three-pointer by Haley White, followed by two layups from Mahlknecht as the lead grew to nine, 30-21, with 3:14 left in the half.
CSUN's lead got as high as 11, but five straight points by UCR, including a Crain three-pointer with nine ticks left on the clock, put the Highlanders within six at the half, 34-28.
The Matadors defense continued strong in the second half, as the Highlanders were forced into 10 turnovers in that period, and 15 in the first half. UCR did outshoot the Matadors, 35.2 percent to 30.4 percent, but CSUN connected on four more three-pointers.
The Highlanders now continue Big West Conference play by hosting Hawai'i on Saturday, January 5 at 5 pm PT at the SRC Arena.
