Hadley's 20 Points Powers Women's Basketball Past UCSB, 45-42

Santa Barbara, CA - Natasha Hadley scored 20 points for the UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team Thursday evening as the Highlanders improved to 6-1 on the road with a 45-42 victory at UC Santa Barbara in Big West Conference action.
UCR improves to 10-9 overall on the year and 3-5 in league play, while the Gauchos fall to 8-12, 4-4.
Neither team shot particularly well from the field, with UCSB edging the Highlanders, 32.7 percent to 29.8 percent. Hadley collected eight rebounds to go along with her game-high 20 points, while Tre'Shonti Nottingham added 12 points and Brittany Crain had seven.
After opening a 5-2 lead one minute and 18 seconds into the game, the Highlanders offense went cold as they missed their next nine shots. Meanwhile, UC Santa Barbara built an 11-5 lead at the 14:14 mark, connecting on 5-of-12 from the floor.
Hadley scored four straight after the timeout to ignite a 10-0 run for UC Riverside as the lead grew to 15-11 with 8:05 left in the half. The Gauchos were scoreless during this run, misfiring on each attempt for the seven minute span.
The teams traded buckets until UCR went up by seven, 21-14, with just under three minutes left in the half. UCSB cut the lead to three, 21-18, with a minute remaining, but consecutive layups by the Highlanders made it a 25-18 score at the intermission.
UCR pushed its lead out to nine, 31-22, following a Crain three-pointer at the 15:19 mark, but the Gauchos countered with four straight as the lead went back to five with 13:16 to go.
The teams again traded buckets with the Highlanders' lead fluctuating between five and seven points until UC Santa Barbara closed to four, 35-31, with just under eight minutes remaining.
A Leah Washington layup started a 6-0 run for UC Riverside as they opened a 41-31 advantage with 5:12 to go. UCR was still up by three possessions, 43-34, with 3:24 to go when the Gauchos put together another run, scoring seven consecutive to close to 43-41 with one minute remaining.
The Highlanders turned the ball over on their next trip down the court, and fouled Nicole Nesbit with 14.8 seconds to go. Nesbit missed the first but made the second to make it a one point ball game, 43-42. Nottingham received the inbounds pass and dribbled for five seconds before being fouled. She stepped to the charity stripe and hit both, putting UCR up 45-42.
UC Santa Barbara headed down the court, but failed to get a shot off as time expired, giving the Highlanders the victory.
UC Riverside now remains on the road traveling to Cal Poly on Saturday, February 2 for a 4 pm PT tip in San Luis Obispo, CA.
