Highlanders Visit Local Schools To Promote Higher Education

Riverside—Members of the UC Riverside Men's Basketball, Men's Soccer, Baseball, Softball and Women's Soccer Teams visited a number of area schools last week encouraging students to stay in school and pursue their dreams.
Steven Thornton (MBK) and Chris Harriel (MBK) traveled to March Middle School in Moreno Valley on Wednesday, December 4 to participate in "Career Day." While there, they interacted with a number of classes, and spoke about how through hard work, they and their teammates were living their dreams of playing Division I basketball and getting a college degree.
Steven Jones (MBK), Hector Romo (MS), Eric Gonzalez (MS), Nicolette Lujan (SB), Karina Romero (SB), Taylor Wright (SB), Danielle Gilter (WS), Alina Cheatham (WS) and members of the cheer squad went to Terrace Elementary School in Riverside on December 6. The group participated in the "No Excuses UCR Partner school Gateway To College" event, where elementary students were encouraged to attend college and receive a higher education.
Austin Quick (MBK), Kris Acevedo (MBK), Ashkan Khosravi (MS), Celina Valencia (WS) and Alissa Guzman (WS) went to Mary Linn Elementary School in Riverside on December 6, and participated in an assembly. UC Riverside alumna Jeannette Mabee and her class "adopted" UCR, and made a presentation to the entire school.
UC Riverside mascot Scotty Highlander made a surprise visit to a kindergarten class at Pedley Elementary School on Monday, December 10. Every morning, this class starts its day off with a chant and the UCR fight song (Watch the class chant for Scotty).
