Riverside, CA—The UC Riverside Softball Team rebounded from a 4-2 loss to Boise State earlier in the day, defeating Weber State 4-3 on day two of the Amy S. Harrison Classic Saturday afternoon.
In the first game, Boise State battled back in the seventh inning to score four runs and earn the win over the Highlanders. But it was UCR who struck first with a lead off single by Dionne Anderson. A fielding error by the Broncos left fielder allowed Anderson to advance all the way to third, and a single by Marissa Escalante plated Anderson putting UC Riverside on the board, 1-0.
The Highlanders extended their lead in the fourth when Escalante scored off of a double to left center by Ashley Ercolano.
Meanwhile, Alyssa Razo kept the Broncos quiet through six innings. After giving up singles in each of the first three innings, Razo retired the side in the fourth and fifth to keep the Broncos off the board. Boise State threatened in the sixth getting two runners on, but Razo and the UC Riverside defense worked out of the jam to keep the Highlanders on top.
Relief pitcher Ercolano entered the game in the seventh with one runner on. The Broncos filled the bases and earned four runs off back-to-back hits and a bases-loaded walk.
Down 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh, UC Riverside was unable reach base and mount a comeback, as the Broncos held on for the come-from-behind victory.
In the next game, UC Riverside mounted a comeback in the fifth inning against Weber State to earn their first victory in the Amy S. Harrison Classic.
The Wildcats plated two in the first off Highlanders starter Ercolano. A double steal put base runners at second and third for Janel Cunningham, who singled up the middle to knock in those two runs.
UC Riverside narrowed the gap in the third scoring one to put the Highlanders on the board. A single by Alexis Pickett brought in Anderson who reached on a two-out walk and then stole second.
The Highlanders took the lead in the fifth scoring three off three hits and a Wildcat error. Hits by Ariel Shore and Brittanie Akey started off the inning for UC Riverside. Nicolette Lujan knocked in Shore on a fielder’s choice before Akey and Lujan came around to score off the Wildcat error.
Weber State answered in the top of the sixth scoring one off of a wild pitch by Ercolano. The Wildcats failed to capitalize on additional scoring opportunities, though, leaving the bases loaded.
Taylor Alvarez replaced Ercolano in the circle for the Highlanders in the top of the seventh, inheriting a one-run lead and a runner at first. Alvarez shut out the Wildcats to earn the save and clinch the victory for UC Riverside.
The final day of the Amy S. Harrison Classic is scheduled for Sunday. UCR faces off against the Wildcats at 11:30 am PT followed by a 2 pm game against San Diego.
