Box Score - Pacific 6, UC Riverside 4
Stockton, CA - The UC Riverside Softball Team concluded its three-game Big West Conference opening series at Pacific Sunday afternoon with a 6-4 loss at Bill Simoni Field.
The Highlanders offense jumped out of the gate in the first inning by scoring three runs. With two outs, back-to-back home runs by Kayla White and Ashley Ercolano put UCR on top, 2-0. Ariel Shore kept the hitting alive as she laced a triple to right center, and came home on Marissa Escalante's RBI single, making it a 3-0 ballgame.
But similar to Saturday's doubleheader against the Tigers, UC Riverside could not hold its lead as Pacific responded with a five-spot in the bottom of the first inning.
Consecutive walks put runners on, and Amy Moore's single scored both cutting the margin to 3-2. Nikki Armagost's double chased UCR starting pitching Taylor Alvarez, but Ercolano did not fair any better as she gave up a single to Nicole Zapotoczny, which scored Moore for the 3-3 tie.
With two outs and the bases loaded, Taylor Brink's single plated two more runs as the Tigers took a 5-3 lead.
UC Riverside got one run back in the fourth as Meagan Esteban scored on an error by Pacific to cut the margin to 5-4. But the Tigers added an insurance run in the sixth to go back up by two, 6-4, and the Highlanders were retired in order in the top of the seventh to end the game.
UCR returns home to host Long Beach State for a three-game series beginning Friday, March 29 at noon PT at Amy S. Harrison Field.
