Santa Barbara, CA—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team finished up its 2012-13 season Saturday evening looking for its first-ever win at the Thunderdome, but UC Santa Barbara's defense proved to be too much as the Gauchos beat the Highlanders, 56-46 (Box Score).
Neither team shot particularly well in the early going, but the Highlanders (6-25, 3-15) built an 8-2 lead through six minutes of play as the Gauchos missed five of their first six shots. UC Riverside also scored three fastbreak baskets during the run thanks to three UCSB miscues.
It was a 17-14 Highlanders lead with 7:38 to go, when UCR scored six straight points to open uo the team's largest lead of the night at nine points, 23-14. UC Santa Barbara (11-19, 7-11) closed out the half by scoring seven of the last eight points, however, and the Highlanders entered the locker room up by three, 24-21.
Chris Harriel led all scorers in the first with 10 points, while Austin Quick added seven. Alan Williams led the Gauchos with eight points and seven rebounds. Both teams made just 35 percent of their shots in the first period.
It was more of the same in the second half as UCR made just 25.0 of its shots after the break. UCSB made 42.9 percent of theirs
Despite the poor shooting, the Highlanders still found themselves tied at 41 with 4:31 remaining, but the Gauchos scored 11 straight points over the next three minutes to put the game out of reach.
Williams led all scorers with 19 points in the game and added 14 rebounds for a double-double. Kyle Boswell added 14 for the Gauchos off the bench. Harriel's 18 paced the Highlanders, and Quick finished with 15.
