Box Score—Cal State Fullerton 4, UC Riverside 1
Riverside—The UC Riverside Softball Team concluded its three-game Big West Conference series with Cal State Fullerton Wednesday afternoon with a 4-1 loss at Amy S. Harrison Field.
The Highlanders (17-29, 1-14) and Titans (22-25, 7-8) were locked in a pitcher's duel early, as the teams combined for two hits through three innings.
Cal State Fullerton broke through in the fourth, though, as Eliza Crawford drew a walk, and was replaced on the base paths by pinch runner Lauren Mario. Gabby Aragon sacrificed Mario to second, and she reached third as a routine rundown turned into an error by the UCR defense.
After a walk that put runners at first and third, Carissa Turang singled to left center to drive Mario in for the 1-0 lead.
UC Riverside responded in the bottom half of the fourth to tie the game at 1-1. Kayla White drew a lead-off walk, and after stealing second, reached third on a ground out from Ashley Ercolano. Alexis Pickett then laid down a bunt, and White beat the throw home to put UCR on board.
After a scoreless fifth on both sides, the Titans took the lead in the sixth. Crawford led off with a walk and moved into scoring position after Sam Galarza's sac bunt, and came home on a Melissa Sechrest double off the centerfield fence.
The Titans added some insurance runs in the seventh, as Ashley Carter singled with one out, and Desiree Ybarra belted a shot over the left centerfield field fence to make it a 4-1 score. That ended the day for UCR starting pitcher Alyssa Razo, as Sophie Slagle replaced her in the circle and got the next two runners out.
UC Riverside was down to its last three outs, and despite getting a one-out walk, could not capitalize any further as Cal State Fullerton held on for the win.
Razo was saddled with the loss for UCR, tossing 6.1 innings and allowing three earned runs. Jasmine Antunez earned the win for the Titans, pitching a complete-game three hitter in the process.
The Highlanders now prepare for a three-game series with the Cal Poly Mustangs April 27-28 at Amy S. Harrison Field in Riverside.
