Box Score - UC Riverside 9, UC Santa Barbara 3
Santa Barbara, CA - The UC Riverside Softball Team concluded the 2013 season Saturday afternoon with a 9-3 victory over UC Santa Barbara. The Highlanders improve to 20-35 on the year and 4-20 in Big West play while the Gauchos fall to 31-24, 12-12.
UCR rallied from a one-run deficit early in the game to score nine runs between the second and sixth innings, avoiding a conference UCSB sweep and ending the 2013 season on a high note.
Ariel Shore drove in three runs while Alexis Pickett drove in two as the Highlanders out hit the Gauchos, 10-5.
UC Santa Barbara took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning as Keilani Jennings hit an RBI single that scored Jessica Soria from second. But UCR responded with solo runs in both the second and third innings.
With runners at second and third with one out in the second, Brittanie Akey hit a sac fly to right field that scored Dionne Anderson for the 1-1 tie. An inning later, Kayla White hit a lead-off triple, and came home as Shore hit a sac fly to left field that put UCR on top, 2-1.
That advantage would be one the Highlanders never relinquished, as the offense came alive scoring three runs in the fourth and four runs in the sixth.
In the fourth, UC Riverside again had runners at second and third, and this time it was Nicolette Lujan driving one home with her RBI single through the right side. After a White single loaded the bases, Shore reached on an error that allowed another runner to score, and Pickett's RBI ground out scored the third run of the inning as UCR took a 5-1 lead.
UC Santa Barbara rallied in the bottom of the fourth, using a lead-off double followed by a single to make it a 5-2 ballgame. With the bases loaded, an RBI ground out by Shelby Wisdom brought another runner home, but a final groundout ended the inning with the Highlanders still leading by three runs.
After a scoreless fifth on both sides in which the Gauchos left two more runners on, the Highlanders added four insurance runs in the sixth. With Lujan at second and White at first, Shore singled through the right side to send Lujan home. Pickett then hit a bunt single to first base that allowed White to score as the lead increased to 7-3.
Marissa Escalante then drove in Shore on her groundout, and Anderson laced a single into centerfield that scored Pickett for the 9-3 Highlanders advantage.
UCSB had just one baserunner on over the final two innings, and was retired in order in the seventh to seal the Highlanders victory.
Sophie Slagle was credited with the win in the circle, tossing 4.0 innings while allowing just one hit. Wisdom took the loss for UCSB giving up five runs.
