Northridge, CA—The UC Riverside Softball Team looked to increase its two-game winning streak Saturday in a doubleheader at Cal State Northridge, but the Matadors (23-29, 9-11) won both games of the Big West Conference series, 5-1 and 8-5.
In game one, despite leaving five runners on base through four innings, the Highlanders (19-32, 3-17) fell behind 1-0 as Mikayla Thielges blasted a no-out homer to right center off UCR starting pitcher Alyssa Razo in the fourth.
UC Riverside scored the equalizer in the top of the fifth as Kayla White singled up the middle, stole second, and came home as Ariel Shore reached base safely on an error.
Razo retired the Matadors in order in the fifth, and in the sixth, the Highlanders again left two runners on base, including one getting thrown out at the plate.
Those runners would prove crucial as the Cal State Northridge offense came alive in the bottom of the sixth, scoring four runs on three hits. With runners at first and second with two outs, Jennifer Tyler hit a shot over the left field fence to put CSUN up, 4-1. A bunt single followed the homer, and a double by Adrienne Martinez drove in the runner making it a 5-1 score.
Down to their last three outs, White singled with one out in the seventh, but the next two batters left her stranded as the Matadors came away with the game one victory, 5-1.
Shelly Tait earned the win in the circle for CSUN, pitching a complete game five-hitter, while Razo took the loss for the Highlanders.
The Matadors continued their late offensive run from game one into the beginning of game two by scoring two runs in the first inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, Mia Pagano doubled to left center to drive two home for the early lead.
The Highlanders got those runs back and more in the third, as White homered with runners at the corners to put UCR on top, 3-2.
UC Riverside then scored two more runs in the fourth as with runners at the second and third, Natalie Sanchez laced a double down the left field line to plate both and increase the Highlanders margin to 5-2.
But CSUN used a five-run fourth inning, captializing on three hits and three UCR errors, and batted around the order to retake the lead, 7-5. The Matadors added an insurance run in the fifth to go up 8-5, and despite leaving two runners in scoring position in the seventh, UCR could not mount a comeback as Cal State Northridge held on for the win.
Ashley Ercolano was saddled with the loss for the Highlanders, allowing five runs—all unearned—in 3.2 innings of work. Pagano earned the win for the Matadors tossing 4.2 innings and allowing two runs.
The Big West Conference series finale between these clubs gets underway on Sunday at noon PT in Northridge, CA.
