Riverside, CA—Annelise Ito scored the first 10 points of the game for the Highlanders, and the UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team led wire-to-wire beating the number one ranked Division II team in the nation, Cal Poly Pomona, 86-62, Saturday afternoon at the SRC Arena. Box Score.
Its hot shooting in the early going helped the Highlanders build a nine-point lead, 22-13, with 9:33 gone in the first. UC Riverside hit a brief cold spell shortly therafter as the Broncos went on an 8-0 run to cut the advantage to one, 22-21. Division II preseason player of the year Jada Blackwell scored the final four points on the run.
Michelle Curry was fouled taking a three-pointer on the Highlanders next trip down the floor, and she connected on all three free throws to stop the Pomona run. Curry drained a jumper in the paint on UCR's following possession, and a Tahvia Morrison bucket put the Highlanders back up by eight.
Ashley Lovett's lay up put a brief stop to a nearly three-minute Broncos scoring drought, but the Highlanders scored the next seven points to push their lead to 15 and took a 13-point advantage into the locker room at halftime.
Crain led all scorers at the break with 14 points, while Ito added 10 as the Highlanders shot 51.7 percent from the floor.
UC Riverside led by double digits the rest of the way, and pushed its lead to as many as 26 thanks to a 13-0 run midway through the second half. The Highlanders were just as consistent from the field in the final 20 minutes of play, connecting on 51.6 percent of their field goal attempts.
Crain led all scorers with 27 points while Ito and Curry joined her in double figures with 19 and 11 respectively. Blackwell led the Broncos with 15 while Ariel Marsh added 14 and Lovett chipped in with 10.
The Highlanders open the 2014-15 regular season on Friday, November 14 vs. Santa Clara. Tip off is scheduled for 5 pm PT at the SRC Arena in Riverside.
