Riverside—The UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team got 31 points from Brittany Crain Tuesday afternoon, and held off a second-half San Diego State comeback to pick up a 64-54 win over the visiting Aztecs.
The first 10 minutes of the game saw three ties and three lead changes, but the Highlanders closed the half on a 13-0 run to take a nine-point lead into the locker room, 30-21. Crain scored 15 of her 31 points in the first half, ending the first-half run with a pair of free throws.
UC Riverside continued its run to start the second half as Jaelyn Wilson's lay up made it a 11-point Highlanders' lead, and a Simone DeCoud jumper put UCR up 13, 34-21.
That's when the Aztecs began to make their move as Ariell Bostick scored five straight points in a 7-0 SDSU run to close the gap to six points with 16:09 remaining.
The Highlanders increased their lead to double figures once again, but the Aztecs scored nine straight midway through the second to slice the lead to one, 43-42 with 9:07 on the clock. San Diego State was never able to get over the hump, however, as UCR netted nine of the final 11 points of the game to secure the win.
Crain added 16 points in the second half to reach the 30-point plateau for time this season and the seventh time in her career.
The Highlanders are off for the next week for the holidays before returning to the hardwood on Monday, December 29 for the Cyclone Challenge in Ames, Iowa. UC Riverside takes on Brown in the game of the tournament and either Howard or host Iowa State on Tuesday, December 30.
