Softball Rallies Back From Four-Run Deficit To Defeat Sacred Heart, 6-5

The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a solo homer from Nicole Deissler, and added a trio of runs the next inning as Kacie Wentworth hit a rocket past the centerfield fence with two runners on base for the 4-0 advantage.
The Highlanders threatened in the third with runners at second and third with no outs, but were unable to convert them into runs as Sacred Heart got out of the inning unscathed with three consecutive outs.
In the fourth, however, UC Riverside got on board using a two-out rally. Stephanie Tickemyer doubled to center field, and came home as pinch-hitter Kaylie Atkinson laced a single up the middle.
Kris DeAnda kept the inning alive as she reached base on a hit by pitch, and Dionne Anderson was then walked to load the bases. Haley Harris followed with a single to left field that scored two runners to cut the advantage to 4-3.
In the fifth, the Highlanders scored the tying run on a Summer Wilson solo home run to left field.
That tie was shortlived as the Pioneers hit their third homer of the game on a Justine Sidthorp blast to left field to take a 5-4 lead in the sixth.
UCR loaded the bases in its respective sixth, but could not score the tying run. In the seventh, though, the Highlanders came through with the game-winner.
Natalie Sanchez singled to centerfield for the tying run scoring Samanda Hernandez, who was on second pinch running for Ashley Ercolano after she led off the frame with a single.
A fielder's choice followed by a single loaded the bases for UCR, and Sacred Heart's pitcher then hit the next batter, Kris DeAnda, allowing the winning run to score for 6-5 final.
UC Riverside will now play Sacred Heart in the second game of Thursday's doubleheader at approximately 2:40 pm PT at Amy S. Harrison Field.
