Los Angeles, CA - The UC Riverside Softball Team split a pair of games to open the LMU Invitational II Friday afternoon, defeating Canisius 11-1 in five innings (box score), while losing 6-2 to Bethune-Cookman in extras (box score).
Against Canisius, the Griffs got to UCR starter Alyssa Razo in the first inning by plating one run after stringing together two hits.
The Highlanders got that run back in the bottom of the first to tie the score at 1-1. Dionne Anderson reached base on an error, and advanced all the way to third before Karina Romero bunt singled Anderson home for the score.
UC Riverside's bats caught fire in the second and third innings, plating four and six runs respectively to increase the margin to 11-1.
With one out and the bases loaded in the second inning, Romero drove in a pair with her single up the middle. Haley Harris then singled to score the third run, and with two outs, Kaylie Atkinson singled through the left side to drive in the fourth.
The next inning, three consecutive singles loaded the bases with no outs for Anderson, who reached on a fielder's choice to score one runner. Romero then came through again, singling to right field to drive in two runs.
Harris reached on an error in the next at bat to score Romero, and Natalie Sanchez homered to left field to clear the bases making it 11-1.
At that point, the Highlanders were on pace to win via the mercy run-rule, and did so after retiring the Griffs side in order in both the fourth and fifth innings.
Razo earned the win in the circle for UCR, while Romero ended the game driving in five and going 3-for-3 with two runs.
The win over Canisius was the fifth in a row for the Highlanders--a season-high. Looking to extend the streak to six, UCR faced off against Bethune-Cookman in the second game of the day, but fell in extras, 6-2.
It was a scoreless game until the fourth when the Wildcats plated a single run. They added another solo run in the sixth, but UCR rallied for a pair of scores in the bottom of that frame.
With Anderson on base after leading off the frame with a single, Sanchez hit her second homer of the day to tie the score at 2-2.
In the seventh, Bethune-Cookman got two baserunners on, but were not able to advance them past second as the Highlanders got out of the inning unscathed. UCR flied out in order in the seventh, and the game headed into the eighth still tied at two.
The Wildcats offense erupted in the eighth, however, by scoring four runs on three hits while leaving three on base. Try as they might, UC Riverside could not rally back in the bottom of that inning as three straight outs ended the game.
The Highlanders continue play at the LMU Invitational II with Saturday games against Dartmouth and the host Lions at 9 and 11 am PT respectively.
