Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside Softball Team lost a Big West Conference series to Hawai'i on Saturday with a 4-1 defeat in game three at Amy S. Harrison Field. Box Score.
Following 7-3 and 8-7 victories by the Rainbow Wahine (18-14, 3-0) over the first two games on Friday and Saturday, the Highlanders (19-17, 0-3) looked to pull out their first win, but fell just short.
Although both teams had opportunities to score over the first two innings, it wasn't until the third when a team plated a run.
In the bottom of that frame, UCR's Nicolette Lujan singled, and reached all the way to third following a UH defensive miscue. With one out, Dionne Anderson reached on a fielder's choice that scored Lujan for the 1-0 lead.
Hawai'i tied it up in the fifth with a single run. With two runners on and two outs, Jazmine Zamora singled to right field to drive in the run.
The Highlanders left three on base in the fifth, failing to convert a two-out rally that loaded the bases.
The Rainbow Wahine countered in the top of the sixth with back-to-back home runs to go up 3-1. That ended the day for UCR starting pitcher Sophie Slagle, but Alyssa Razo did not fair much better, allowing another run to score as the 'Bows increased their advantage to 4-1.
UC Riverside got a runner on in the sixth, but left her stranded. With one out In the seventh, the Highlanders put together back-to-back singles by Kris DeAnda and Dionne Anderson to put the tying run at the plate. Unfortunately, Karina Romero lined into a double play to end the inning and the game, as UC Riverside's seventh-inning rally fell just short.
The Highlanders now hit the road for a three-game set at Long Beach State on April 5-6 in Long Beach, CA.
