In total, there were 18 combined hits and seven errors among the two teams--five from UH and two from UC Riverside.
In the first inning, UCR starting pitcher Alyssa Razo got the first two Hawai'i batters out before running into trouble.
Similar to the first inning on Friday, Razo gave up a double and two walks to load the bases. A wild pitch then advanced all three runners, and Sharla Kleibenstein's single scored the other two as UH took an early 3-0 lead.
That would end Razo's day in the circle as Sophie Slagle came on in relief, and recorded the third out of the inning to escape without any additional runs scoring.
The Highlanders scored two in the bottom of the first, capitalizing on three Rainbow Wahine errors.
Dionne Anderson was given another chance at an at bat following a dropped foul ball, and made UH pay with a single up the middle. Karina Romero sacrificed her to second, and Natalie Sanchez doubled to drive her in. Sanchez reached third on that play due to another error, and scored after Haley Harris doubled down the left field line.
A walk and another error put more runners on, but UCR had one runner thrown out at the plate, and could not convert additional runs stranding two.
UC Riverside took the lead in the third inning, scoring five runs on four hits and two more Hawai'i errors. With the bases loaded and one out, Sanchez reached on an error by the second baseman, and advanced to second as all three runners came home to score as UCR went up 5-3.
After an out, Ashley Ercolano singled to center field to drive in Sanchez, 6-3. A walk and a single again loaded the bases, and Taylor Wright lifted a single to left field to score the runner from third, 7-3.
After a scoreless third inning by both teams, the 'Bows rallied late in the game scoring single runs in the fourth, sixth, and seventh, and two runs in the fifth to go up 8-7. They also left nine runners on base in those four innings while utilizing multiple illegal pitches thrown from Slagle.
Meanwhile, UCR left four runners on base over the last four innings, with its best opportunity coming in the sixth with runners at first and second.
Trailing by one run in the seventh with two outs, Anderson reached base by getting hit by a pitch, and stole second to get into scoring position. Unfortunately for the Highlanders, a fly out ended the game and UCR's attempt for the tie or win fell just short.
UCR and Hawai'i complete their three-game Big West Conference series Saturday afternoon.
