Dionne Anderson Breaks Big West Stolen Base Record As Softball Falls To CSUN, 9-3

CSUN (29-19, 6-6) got out on top early putting a two-spot in the board in the first. UCR pitcher Sophie Slagle had some control issues, walking two batters and hitting one to load the bases. The Matadors used a two-out rally as Katelyn Hooper singled up the middle to drive in two runs.
The Highlanders cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first as Dionne Anderson singled to lead off the frame, and stole second. She moved to third on a passed ball, and came home on Natalie Sanchez's single to left field. With the steal, Anderson broke the Big West record for stolen bases in a single season, now totaling 41. Slagle gave up a lead-off double to start the second, and that ended her day as Alyssa Razo came on to pitch. Razo quickly got one out, but walked the next batter to put two runners on. UCR got that runner out, however, on a caught stealing at second base to make it two outs.
However, back-to-back walks loaded the bases for CSUN, but Razo got out of the jam striking out Madison Fleming to end the threat.
The Highlanders tied the game in the bottom of the second following Sommer Wilson's RBI single that plated Stephanie Tickemyer after she reached on a fielding error by the CSUN second baseman. UCR continued to get runners on base following consecutive walks to load the bases, but could not capitalize any further as a final strike out ended the inning.
In the fourth, UC Riverside worked out of another jam as CSUN stranded two runners, but the blue and gold also stranded a runner at second.
The next frame, the Matadors loaded the bases following a UCR fielders error and two hit-by-pitches. Cal State Northridge then used a two-out rally to plate a pair of runs after another defensive miscue and a single brought across two.
In the sixth, CSUN tacked on another two runs to go up 6-2. Taylor Glover triple's scored one, and an Ariana Wassmer single scored the other.
UC Riverside loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth with two singles and a walk, and had the tying run at the plate. The Highlanders got one run across on a passed ball to make it 6-3, but left two runners stranded to end the inning.
The Matadors continued to score runs in the top of the seventh, putting up a three-spot as their lead ballooned to 9-3.
Down to their last half inning, UCR made a run in the bottom of the seventh with one out as Sanchez singled and Haley Harris drew a walk. The Highlanders failed to convert those runners, however, as the game ended with consecutive outs to give CSUN the win.
On the day, the teams combined for 17 hits but left 23 runners on base.
Razo was saddled with the loss for UCR, while Brianna Elder earned the win tossing 6.1 innings of work.
Next up for the Highlanders is a three-game Big West Conference series on the road at UC Davis April 26-27 in Davis, CA.
