Softball Rebounds From 3-0 Loss To Defeat Cal Poly 2-1 In Nightcap

San Luis Obispo, CA - The UC Riverside Softball Team split a doubleheader at Cal Poly Friday afternoon, dropping the first game 3-0 (box score), but rebounding for a 2-1 victory in the nightcap (box score).
In game one, the Highlanders threatened in the top of the first inning following a lead-off walk to Dionne Anderson, and a single by Karina Romero putting two on with no outs. Unfortunately for the blue and gold, three straight outs ended the frame leaving both runners stranded.
Cal Poly capitalized on back-to-back walks in the second inning as Ashley Romano doubled to drive in one. The Mustangs would go on to load the bases, but the UCR defense got out of the jam unscathed without another run coming across.
Courtney Tyler hit a solo home run in the third to put CP on top 2-0, and in the fourth, Jillian Andersen's RBI fielder's choice scored Romano, who initially doubled to get things started for the Mustangs.
UC Riverside had another opportunity to put runs on the board in the sixth, but fell just shy. Kris DeAnda reached base following an error, and moved to second on Anderson's single up the middle. Romero followed with a single up the middle, but DeAnda was tagged out at the plate as she attempted to score.
The Highlanders were retired in order in the seventh inning as CP had the win in hand. Sierra Hyland earned the win in the circle tossing a complete game shutout, while Alyssa Razo took the loss for UCR.
In game two, UC Riverside used a two-out rally in the second inning scoring two runs on one hit, one error, while leaving three on base. Taylor Wright drew a lead-off walk, and moved to second on Ashley Ercolano's sac. Following a second out, Nicolette Lujan reached on an error, and Stephanie Tickemyer was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
DeAnda then singled to right field to score Wright, and Anderson followed by drawing a walk to score Lujan for the 2-0 lead.
That ended the day for Mustangs starter Chloe Wurst, who was replaced by Hyland in the circle. Hyland allowed just three more hits to UCR the rest of the way, but those two runs were all the Highlanders needed for the victory.
Cal Poly cut the lead in half in the sixth inning, 2-1, as Mariah Cochiolo scored from third on a passed ball. That was all the scoring the Mustangs could garner, however, as the Highlanders held on the for win as Sophie Slagle pitched a complete game victory.
These teams will battle it out on Saturday, May 10 in the rubber match, scheduled for noon PT in San Luis Obispo, CA.
