Box Score San Luis Obispo, CA—The UC Riverside Volleyball Team (6-14, 1-6) was in action for the second night in a row, this time looking for a victory against Cal Poly (14-4, 6-1), but the Mustangs got 18 kills from Adlee Van Winden and 39 assists from Taylor Nelson as they picked up the 3-0 conference victory.
The Highlanders were on their heels from the outset of the match as the Mustangs jumped out to a 10-4 lead to take control of the first set. Cal Poly then won fifteen of the next nineteen points to take the first set 25-8.
In the second set the Highlanders battled back into the match and trailed the Mustangs 13-12 midway through the set. The teams traded points before being tied at 24-24, the Mustangs then capitalized on a UCR service error and got a set clinching kill from Hannah Schleis to closeout the second set.
The third set began with Cal Poly jumping out to 12-4 lead before Coach Patton called for time. The Highlanders played the Mustangs even over the next ten points, then trailed 20-10, and battled back by winning seven of ten points, but Cal Poly still went on to win third set 25-18 for thier sixth Big West conference win.
The Highlanders were led by Alexis Urbach's 9 kills and Chelsea Doyle's 23 assists, but allowed the Mustangs an attack percentage of .394 through the three sets.
The Highlanders return home to face the Aggies of UC Davis (9-12, 4-3) Friday, October 23 at 7 pm PT.
