Ponce Records First Shutout Of The Season In, 8-0 Win Over St. John's

Riverside- The UC Riverside Softball extends its win streak to six after a six-inning, 8-0 shutout against St. John's Wednesday afternoon.
The Highlanders are now 12-4 overall matching their best start since the 2006 season when they won 12 of their first 16 games.
Red-shirt junior Chelsea Ponce recorded her ninth win of the season, pitching all six innings for the Highlanders, recording seven strikeouts and giving up only two strikouts. St. John's has only been held to two hits so far this season in one other game which was against No. 11 Tennessee. Ponce now boasts a 1.22 era for the season and leads the Big West in wins.
The Big West Player of the Week Natalie Sanchez and freshman Rebecca Faulkner both blasted home runs for a total of five RBI. Sanchez' home run was her third in a row after hitting two back-to-back home runs in the Highlanders' 10-2 win over San Diego on Sunday (recap).
The Highlanders are back in action Friday, Feb. 27 at 8 am PT, taking on Colorado State in their first game of the Wildcat Invitational.
