Volleyball Falls, 3-1, At UC Davis

Box Score Davis, CA—The UC Riverside Volleyball Team was looking to start Big West Conference play with wins in its first two matches for the first time in its history Wednesday evening, but UC Davis got 24 kills from Kaylin Squyres and 19 from Kendal Walbrecth as the Aggies picked up the 3-1 victory.

Each of the first two sets needed extra time to decide the winner as UC Davis (6-11, 1-2) took the first, 28-26, and the Highlanders evened things up by taking the second with an identical, 28-26, score.

The Aggies scored the first five points of the third set, but UCR (6-9, 1-1) recorded the next five to tie the score. UC Davis edged out to a three-point lead, 16-13, and took control of the set by scoring the next five points to go up by eight. A service error ended the run, but UC Davis scored the final four points of the set to go up two-sets-to-one.

The Highlanders faced a two-to-one deficit over the weekend in their conference opening win over Cal State Fullerton, and early in the fourth, it appeared as if they might do so again as UCR score six of the first seven points.

It was still a five-point Highlanders advantage at 19-14, but UC Riverside went cold as the Aggies scored 11 of the final 13 points of the match to secure the victory.

Helena Peric led UCR with 18 kills, but the Highlanders only managed an attack percentage of 0.93 through the four sets.

The Highlanders return home this weekend to host #10 Hawai'i at the SRC Arena beginning at 6 pm PT.
