Napa, CA—UC Riverside alumnus Brendan Steele '05 birdied the final three holes at Silverado Resort and Spa North to win the Safeway Open and earn his second career PGA Tour victory.
Steele started the day at -11, four shots back of 54-hole leader Patton Kizzire at -15. He then shot his best round of the tournament in the final 18, a seven-under par 65, which included birdies on the 571 yard, par 5 16th, 17, and the finishing par 5 18th to post at -18. His 270 total would hold up as Kizzire carded a two-under 70 to finish at -17 (271), one stroke behind Steele.
Steele led the Highlanders to their first taste of Big West Championship success with back-to-back titles in 2004 and 2005. He still remains the Men's Golf DI leader in scoring average (72.27), tournament wins (5), and par or better rounds (69). He picked up his first career victory at the 2011 Valero Texas Open (story).
