Volleyball Competes With #14 Hawai'i In Front Of Third-Largest Crowd Ever, But Falls 3-0

Riverside—In front of the third-largest crowd ever in the Division I history of the program (676), the UC Riverside Volleyball competed with #14 Hawai'i before falling in three sets. (10-25, 18-25, 22-25)

Prior to the match the Highlanders celebrated Native American Heritage with a performance by the Traditional Bird Song Singers.

The Rainbow Wahine got off to a quick start as they jumped out to an, 8-2, lead in a first set in which they never trailed and eventually won, 25-10.

The second set saw the visitors claim 10 of the first 15 points, forcing the Highlanders to call for time with the score 10-5.Coming out of the stoppage, the blue and gold rallied by to outscore Hawai'i 11-6 to tie the match at 16 apiece aided by three kills from Mickayla Sherman, who had six in the frame.

Hawai'i went on a run of their own, 9-2 to close out the set, 25-18 and go up two sets to none.

In the third set the Highlanders with the score knotted 7-7, the Highlanders battled to take four out of five points and push their first lead of the match to four, 12-8. Meg Graham had a pair of kills in the stretch, set up by Chelsea Doyle who tallied a dozen assists in the third set alone.

The Rainbow Wahine then outscored the Highlanders 11-4, causing Coach Patton-Coleman to pause the action for the final time trailing 19-16.

UC Riverside would stave off three match points thanks to a Sherman killm a Doyle ace and an attack error by Hawai'i before eventually falling, 25-22 in the set and three in the match.

Sherman led the way for the Highlander with 11 kills, and six digs. Doyle had 25 assists for the match, and connected on four kills on five swings.Maddie Hubbell had a match-high 18 digs to lead the UCR defensive back row.

Hawai'i got 12 kills from McKenna Granato and 11 from Nikki Taylor in the victory.

The UC Riverside Volleyball Team returns to action early next week with a Tuesday road match at CSUN, before hosting Cal State Fullerton Friday.
