Riverside—Michelle Curry poured in 17 second half points to lead the UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team to a, 77-64, victory over GCU at the SRC Arena.
Simone DeCoud became the 17
th member of the
1,000 point club with seven points on the night to go her with six rebounds.
Réjane Vérin led UCR with a season-high 25 points on 10-14 shooting from the field and a perfect 4-4 from the line, while nearly posting a double-double with nine boards.
Clémence Lefebvre registered season highs of 13 points and six rebounds in the victory.
The Highlanders trailed, 40-30, after two quarters played. They shot 46.2 percent for the half and got 17 points from Vérin, but had trouble slowing down GCU's Marina Laramie, who scored 20 first half points on 9-13 shooting.
In the third quarter, UCR climbed back to within striking distance to trail by four, 48-44, with 3:03 to go, when Lefebvre connected on a three-pointer from the left corner for her 10th point of the period to make it a one-point game.
After a series of misses on both ends, Michelle Curry was invited to shoot from distance by a retreating defense, and buried her first three-point attempt of the young season to give the Highlanders their first lead of the second half, 50-48.
The UC Riverside defense turned up the pressure on the Lopes, forcing them into five turnovers in a period that saw them score eight points on 2-12 shooting, and Laramie go 0-4 from the field.
To start the fourth, Curry again relied on her new favorite shot, as she connected on her second three-pointer in as many tries to open the scoring and put UCR up, 53-48.
After a GCU three cut the lead to just two, Curry then got fouled on a layup she made, and converted an old-fashioned three-point play.
Laramie answered with her first points of the second half, but Curry sank a jumper to maintain the blue and gold advantage, and register 11 straight points for the home side.
Vérin would score four of the next six points in the midst of 14-0 UCR run that put the game out reach, as the Highlanders held on for the, 77-64, victory.
Curry added a game-high eight assists, while pulling down six rebounds Tuesday night. Laramie finished with 24 points, nine rebounds in leading the Lopes, who got 16 from Jessica Gajewski.
The team is off for finals exams next week, and returns to action Saturday December 10
th at home versus Seattle University in a 5pm tip.
