Riverside--Despite double-digit kills from Cristina Maietta and Brooke Callahan and 22 digs from Maddie Hubbell, the UC Riverside Volleyball Team fell three sets to one to UC Davis at home Tuesday night.
The Highlanders trailed 17-11 midway through the opening set, before taking six of seven points to close the UC Davis margin to just one at, 18-17. The visitors then responded by winning seven of nine points en route to a, 25-19, first set victory.
The Aggies had 17 kills compared to UCR's five, and out hit the blue and gold .190 to -0.59 for the set.
Early in the second set, the Highlanders found themselves down by six points once again at 17-11. They would get no closer as Davis went on to claim the second set by a score of 18-25, and take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
Through two sets played, the Highlanders had more errors than kills, 21 errors against 15 kills. Davis doubled up UC Riverside in blocks with an eight compared to the Highlander's four.
Brooke Callahan lead UCR with seven kills, while Sherman and Maietta added three each. Davis got six kills from Annie Elchie and five from Kendall Walbrecht to go along with four kills each from three different players.
The Highlanders got out to a 10-7 advantage in the early going, before rallying to take seven of ten points and go ahead at 17-10. The Aggies quickly responded with six straight points to get the score to, 17-16.
The clubs would split the next eight points, before the Highlanders closed out the third set with four straight points to earn the 25-20 victory. Maietta had two of her seven third set kills in the final stretch, both assisted by Chelsea Doyle, who came up with set clinching kill for UCR.
The Highlanders finished the third set with 17 kills, while UC Davis had 12. UCR committed seven errors on 40 attempts while hitting for a .250 percentage, their best set of the match.
In the fourth set the home side fell behind 15-8, forcing Coach Patton-Coleman to call for time. The team would respond by closing the Aggies margin to just two as the match advanced to 20-18, but the Highlanders would get no closer, as Davis would take five of the final seven points to win the fourth frame, 25-20, and the match 3-1.
Maietta led UC Riverside with 12 kills and 10 digs in recording her fourth double-double of the season, while Callahan put together back-to-back double-digit kills for the first time in her career with 10 kills, having notched 13 in her last match.Â
Hubbell led all players with 22 digs to raise her digs per set to 4.31, up from 4.25 when she entered the match. Meg Graham added six kills to the cause, and got up for a pair of solo blocks and assisted on five others.Â
UCR will head up the to central coast to take on Cal Poly Friday, and UC Santa Barbara on Saturday.
