Riverside—Secean Johnson posted a 21-point, 10-rebound double-double Thursday evening, but it wasn't enough to prevent the UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team from dropping its fourth straight game, 65-55, to visiting UC Santa Barbara.
The Highlanders were playing without Taylor Johns, who was dismissed from the team earlier in the week for violating team and departmental rules.
Trailing by 11 at the half, 29-18, UC Riverside began the second stanza by scoring 12 of the first 15 points, slicing the Gauchos advantage to two, 32-30. Unfortunately, that was as close as the Highlanders would get the rest of the night as UC Santa Barbara improved to 12-12 on the season and 6-5 in Big West play. The victory was also Gauchos' Head Coach Bob Williams'
300th of his career.
UCR fell to 13-15 overall, and 4-8 in conference.
Jaylen Bland, who needed two made three pointers on the night to break Maurice
Pullum's career mark of 193, connected on the record-setting long-ball with 9:05 to go in the game. His next made three, which came with 6:15 on the clock, tied
Pullum's single-season record of 100.
Johnson had a balanced game with 10 points and 6 boards in the first half and 11 points and four rebounds in the second. Bland was the only other member of the Highlanders to score in double figures with 11 on the night.
Michael Bryson paced the Gauchos with 18 points, while John Green added 14 off the bench. The UC Santa Barbara reserves outscored the Highlanders' bench corps 30-9 on the night.
UC Riverside hits the road for the next three games beginning with a Thursday, February 25 game at Hawai'i. Tip is slated for 9 pm PT.
