Davis--UCR (19-7, 12-0) fought through foul trouble and a third quarter surge from the Aggies to claim their 13th victory in a row, 12th in conference as the Highlanders got 58 combined points from Brittany Crain and Rejane Verin in a, 90-76, win over third place UC Davis (15-11, 8-5).
Crain had 18 fourth quarter points, including four three pointers in putting up a game-high 33 points.Â
The game seesawed back and forth in the first half, as each team had 10-0 runs in the first quarter than ended tied at 19 apiece.
With 3:57 to play in the second quarter leading 32-31, the Highlanders went on 11-0 run to closeout the quarter. Simone DeCoud had seven points in the run and Verin had the other four, helping UCR to a, 43-31, halftime advantage.
Crain and Verin each had 13 points at the break, and DeCoud 10. Morgan Bertsch's seven points lead the Aggies, who got six points from Alyson Doherty and had a trio score five each.
UCR lead, 51-36, midway through the third, when the Aggies went on a 16-2 run to cut the Highlander lead to just one. UC Davis got three long distance connects from Kourtney Eaton, who hit her third triple as time expired in the period to enter the fourth trailing, 57-55.
In the final 10 minutes, the Aggies took the lead, 65-62, by scoring eight straight points over a two minute stretch. Crain would answer with a three to tie the game, Doherty then hit two free throws to retake the lead, but Crain connected on a NBA range three pointer and made it clear she was not going to let the Highlanders fall.
The Highlanders would close out the game 22-9, and go on to win, 90-76. Verin had nine points in the quarter and helped UCR control the defensive glass with five rebounds in the final frame.
They committed just nine turnovers, compared to 18 by the Aggies, and shot 19-of-20, 95 percent from the free throw line.
Crain's 33 led all scorers, and Verin had 25 points, 11 rebounds for her fourth straight double double to go along with a career-high tying five steals. DeCoud poured in 16 points and Michelle Curry battled through sickness to score 11 points, grab three rebounds and dish out three assists.
The Highlanders, who only have seven players available, had to manage with Crain, Verin, and Inara Nyfinga carrying four fouls most of the fourth quarter.
