Baseball Falls To Washington In Pitchers' Duel, 2-1, In 10 Innings

Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team found itself in the middle of yet another pitchers' duel Friday night, battling Washington into extra innings before falling 2-1 in 10.

Highlanders starter Austin Sodders, was once again the recipient of some tough luck as the UC Riverside offense was only able to support him with one run. Although he struck out seven on the night, the left-hander also struggled with wildness walking six batters in his five-plus innings of work.

The Huskies (3-1) put runners in scoring position in five of his six innings, finally breaking through in the top of the sixth. John Naff drew a lead-off walk, ending Sodders night, and bringing Alex Fagalde out of the bullpen. An MJ Hubbs' single to left put runners at first and second, and both runners advanced 90 feet after a Chris Baker sacrifice bunt. After Willie MacIver walked to load the bases, Levi Jordan struck out looking, and it appeared as if Fagalde might work his way out of the jam. But a passed ball brought Neff plateward with the first run of the game.

The Highlanders (2-3) evened the score in their half of the sixth thanks to a passed ball of their own. With two outs and Vince Fernandez on first, Cody Worden singled through the left side putting runners at the corners. That brought Drake Zarate to the pate, but MacIver couldn't handle relief pitcher Greg Minier's offering, and Fernandez scampered home with the tying run.

The teams traded zeroes over the next three innings, and headed to the top of the 10th tied at one. UC Riverside sent its fifth pitcher of the night, Jacob Worrell (0-1) to the mound to start the frame, but after a Naff strikeout, Hubbs doubled to left to put the go-ahead run in scoring position. Baker traded places with him three pitches later, driving Hubbs home with a double down the left field line.

Washington closer Troy Rallings pitched a scoreless bottom of the 10th, striking out two for his second save of the season. Spencer Jones recorded the victory with his one inning of scoreless relief in the bottom of the ninth.

The Highlanders and Huskies play games two and three of their four games series as part of a double header Saturday beginning at 11 am.
