CSUB Scores Six In Seventh To Top Baseball, 8-2

Bakersfield, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team had its sights set on a sweep Sunday afternoon after the Highlanders took the first two games of a three-game series against CSU Bakersfield, Saturday. UCR took a 2-1 lead into the seventh, but the Runners scored six runs in the bottom of the inning, to avoid the sweep, eventually winning 8-2.

Ricky Delgado (0-4) allowed just two hits through his first five innings of work for the Highlanders, striking out four and walking one. His counterpart, AJ Monarrez (1-1) was equally as effective, allowing four hits through five innings, and the teams entered the sixth locked in a scoreless tie.

The Highlanders (7-10) broke the tie in their half of the sixth as Vince Fernandez opened the inning with a single through the right side, and two outs later, Mark Contreras launched his first home run of the season over the right field fence to give UC Riverside a 2-0 lead.

The Roadrunners cut the advantage in half in the bottom of the sixth on a single, a sac bunt and a single. Monarrez retired the Highlanders in order in the seventh, and Delgado returned to the mound to start the bottom half of the frame.

Bakersfield (5-10) greeted him with a single, a walk, and a single to load the bases, and UC Riverside Head Coach Troy Percival made the call to his bullpen, bringing in Jacob Worrell. Worrell recorded the first out of the inning on a sacrifice fly which tied the score, and CSUB took the lead on a single up the middle which drove in a pair. A double to left by Christian Deaton put runners at second and third, and a fielder's choice off the bat of Mahlik Jones made it a 5-2 game.

Ryan Lillie came on to replace Worrell, but he threw a wild pitch which scored Deaton. Max Carter then reached on a throwing error by Colby Schultz which brought another run home.

The Roadrunners turned the game over to Chance Gusbeth in the eighth, and he kept the Highlanders off the board for their final six outs.

UC Riverside returns home this week to take on New Mexico State for a three-game series beginning Friday evening at 7 pm PT.
