Aggies Timely Hitting Sends Baseball To, 4-2, Defeat

Riverside--New Mexico State plated all four of its runs on two-out base hits Saturday afternoon as the Aggies topped the UC Riverside Baseball Team 4-2. The victory evened the weekend series between the clubs at one apiece. Sunday's rubber match begins at 12 pm PT at The Plex.

Angel Landazuri (2-3) made his fifth start of the season for the Highlanders, and the Aggies jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to a two-out Austin Botello single to center that scored Daniel Johnson.

UC Riverside (8-11) tied the scored in the bottom of the second as Aaron Cisneros' sac fly brought Casey Worden home from third.

It remained a 1-1 game until the top of the fourth when New Mexico State (11-10) once again put together a two-out rally. After Landazuri recorded the first two outs of the frame, Greg Popylisen beat out an infield single to short, and stole second to get into scoring position. Brent Sakurai then singled to center to give the Aggies the lead.

NMSU scored again in the fifth, this time on a bleeder to second by Joseph Koerper which plated Johnson from third.

Landazuri faced two batters in the sixth before giving way to Jacob Worrell. Worrell got out of a first-and-second, no-out jam thanks to a pop up in the infield, and a pair of ground outs, but he wasn't so fortunate in the seventh.

Botello led off the inning with a double to left center which the Highlanders lost in the sun. Two batters later, Trey Stine singled through the let side moving Botello up 90 feet, and Sakurai's two-out double made it 4-1 Aggies.

Cody Sporrer's run scoring ground out in the seventh sliced the Aggies advantage to two, and that's where the score remained.

Alex Fagalde pitched a scoreless eighth, and Matt Ellis tossed a scoreless ninth, but the Highlanders offense was unable to get UC Riverside back into the game. Aggies reliever Tyler Erwin pitched the final two innings allowing just one hit to earn his second save of the season.

Kyle Bradish (2-2) got the win for New Mexico State going seven innings, scattering five hits and striking out eight.
