Softball Gets Walk-off, 4-3, Win Against UNLV And 5-2 Victory Over Loyola Marymount

Riverside—The UC Riverside Softball Team picked up wins in both its games Sunday, against Loyola Marymount and UNLV.

LMU 2, UC Riverside 5

In game one of the day, the Highlanders defeated the LMU Lions, 5-2. Tayler Misfeldt took a shutout in the bottom of the seventh, but allowed a two-run homer to straight away center.

Misfeldt scattered nine hits over seven innings.  Jenna Curtan went 2-for-3, with a double and a triple, and scored two runs. Curtan was one of three Highlanders with two hits in the opening game. Maddy Richard had a pair of hits to go along with her stolen base and run scored. Catcher Chelsey Holley drove in a run and had two singles in the win.

Both teams were scoreless in the first three innings, but in the fourth the home team got on the board, when Curtan scored on an error on a ball hit by Erika Campbell.

In the fifth, UCR exploded for four runs on four hits, which included four one-run hits to stake them to a, 5-0 lead. Misfeldt shook off the long ball she gave up in seventh, and retired three straight Lions to earn her 13th win on the season.

UNLV 3, UC Riverside 4

In the second game of the day, Freshman Hannah Rodriguez had a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Highlanders to a, 4-3, win over visiting UNLV.

Harris Haley scored in the home half of the first, when Holley brought her in from second on a two-out single to right field.

The Rebels answered in the top of the second, when Misfeldt entered the game in relief of Kaylynn Pierce with the bases loaded. She would allow a run scoring single and no more, as she worked her way out of the inning, leaving runners stranded on second and third.

In the top of fourth, UNLV took the lead, 3-1, with a two-run single with two out.  UC Riverside would respond in the bottom of the fourth, when Natalie Sanchez had a two out single that plated two for the home team, tying the game at three apiece.

Courtnie Ploesch singled up the middle with a one out in the bottom of the seventh. Jenae Lockwood followed with a single to right, bringing up Rodriguez with one out and two aboard. Rodriguez, of the top-10 contact hitters in the country, laced a 3-1 offering up the middle that allowed Ploesch to come in just ahead of the center field's throw to the plate and end the game in walk-off fashion for the third time this season.

Misfeldt (14-4) went five and two thirds to pick up her second win of the day.

The Highlanders host St. Mary's Tuesday in a double header with the first pitch scheduled for 11 am at Amy S. Harrison Field.
