Honolulu, HI—Monday, The UC Riverside Men's Tennis Team matched the record for victories in a season since joining the Big West with their 10th, after defeating visiting Portland State, 6-1.
Friday, they broke that record with their 11th, a 4-2 decision over Hawai'i. The match was delayed by rain for six hours before the teams were able to get started. Doubles matches, which traditionally occur first, were pushed to the end of the schedule in favor of the singles matches due to the unknown window of playable conditions.
Anderson Ju in line six singles and Calvin Ngo in line five picked up straight sets victories in the first two matches to finish.
Kyle McCann won a first set tiebreaker to prevail 7-6 (4), 6-4 over Chan, and reigning Big West Player of the Week Sean Yun outlasted Hawai'i's Kolaric 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 for a win that gave the Highlanders four points, securing the overall match for UCR and making doubles play unnecessary.
Coach Mattias Johansson on the victory, "Great conference win after a six hour rain delay. We started with singles so we could complete the match before we left Hawai'i. It was a real battle on the top two courts (line 1& 2), and a bit easier in the five and six line matches."The Highlanders return to action Thursday March 31st, when they host Middlebury in the SRC Tennis Center at 1 pm.UCR (11-10, 1-1), Hawai'i (1-11, 0-3)
