Highlanders Win, 8-0, Over Santa Clara In Five Innings To Go 3-0 In The Highlander Classic

Riverside—The UC Riverside Softball Team (15-6) defeated Santa Clara (5-12), 8-0, in the final game of the Highlander Classic Sunday.

Haley Harris had two hits, scored two runs, a walk, an RBI and a stolen base to lead the UCR offense that put up eight runs, including a walk off run in the bottom of the fifth.

Kaylynn Pierce (7-2) tossed a two hit complete game shutout for her third victory of the weekend. She struck out three and retired 15 of the 18 batters she faced, as she got solid error free defense behind her.

The Highlanders jumped out a, 2-0, lead in the first inning on running score hits by Natalie Sanchez and Jenna Curtan.  In the bottom of the second they erupted for five runs on three hits and an error. Harris (1), Curtan (1), Jenae Lockwood (2) and Erika Campbell had RBI's in the second to make it a seven run game.

Pierce dominated the Broncos and retired the side on just six pitches in the top of the fifth. In the home half of the inning, the bases were loaded with one out when Curtan launched a fly ball to left that was deep enough to allow Maddie Richard to beat the throw home and score to end the game in five innings, 8-0.

The win was the third in the Highlander Classic and the eighth in a row for UCR. They host a double header against Toledo Tuesday, March 8 with first pitch scheduled for 12 noon.
