Softball Falls To Hawai'i, 5-3, In Eight Innings

Riverside—Coming to Friday's matchup with Hawai'i, the UC Riverside Softball team was on four-game winning streak and had a 2-0-1 record in extra inning games. They were defeated, 5-3, by the Rainbow Wahine, who scored two in top of eighth and retired the Highlanders in order to secure the win.

Maddy Richard drew a lead off walk to begin the home half of the first and moved over second on a Haley Harris single to through the right side. Natalie Sanchez then bounced to third, the third baseman step on the bag for the force-out and fired in time to get Sanchez at first for the double play. Harris, already headed to second, beat the throw back to third giving UCR a runner on third with two out. Jenna Curtan then doubled to left field, scoring Harris for a 1-0 lead.

Hawai'i would be held scoreless until the top of the fourth, when a two out throwing error in attempt get a runner at third got by the third baseman and allowed a tying run to score. In the bottom of the fourth, Curtan and Chelsea Holley reached on errors to lead off the inning. Stephanie Tickemyer then laid down a sac bunt to give the Highlanders runners on second and third with one out. Curtan would come in to score on a Courtnie Ploesch single to left, but Holley was caught at home trying to score from second. Jenna Lockwood facing a 1-2 count laced a double to right center; scoring Ploesch and staking Misfeldt to 3-1 lead entering the fifth.

The visitors would tack a run in the top on frame on a RBI groundout to shortstop Hannah Rodriguez, who had no play on the runner from third. In the sixth they would get the equalizer on pinch hitter Tayana Mata's single to left that scored Keiki Carlos.

After both teams went scoreless in the seventh, Hawai'i got a lead off single to start the eighth from Carlos. Misfeldt would retire the next two hitters, but Carlos would now stand at second with two outs. Mata singled to right and went to second on the attempt to get Carlos, who beat the throw to the plate. Dori Ann Sugai then knocked in Mata to make it a 5-3 Hawai'i lead.

Brittany Hitchcock (9-10) would take the ball in the bottom of the eighth for the Rainbow Wahine and retire the Highlanders on seven pitches for the win. Misfeldt's third straight eight-inning effort would results in the first loss in her last four starts.

Maddy Richard extending her streak of three-hit games to five with a 3-for-3 performance Friday afternoon.

The clubs will finish up the series in a double header tomorrow with game one's first pitch slated to start at 1 pm.
