Baseball Comes Back From Three Runs Down To Beat San Diego, 5-4

San Diego, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team found itself trailing San Diego, 4-1, after four innings Tuesday evening, but the Highlanders scored single runs in the fifth and seventh, and plated two in the top of the ninth to complete the comeback in a 5-4 victory over the Toreros.

UCR fell behind 1-0 in the first as three of the first five batters reached base, and those that didn't were retired on a sacrifice bunt and a sac fly. The Highlanders got out of the inning on a failed double-steal in which they threw out Roman Garcia at the plate.

UC Riverside (15-19) tied the score in the top of the second thanks to back-to-back singles by Austin Colvin and Michael Farris, a wild pitch, and an RBI ground out by Colby Schultz.

It remained a 1-1 game until the bottom of the fourth when the Toreros plated three runs. Two came off the bat of Troy Conyers when he sent a one-out offering over the right field fence, and the last scored on an RBI single by Bryson Brigman

UC Riverside started chipping away at the lead in the top of the fifth. Drake Zarate began the inning with a double down the right field line, and moved to third on a sac bunt by Marc Contreras. Adonis Morrison followed with a single to center, cutting the San Diego lead in half.

The Highlanders pulled to within one in the top of the seventh on an infield single by Vince Fernandez which scored Contreras from third.

UCR completed the comeback in the ninth thanks in part to a Toreros error. After loading the bases with one out, Cody Sporrer hit a grounder to short for what could have been a game-ending double play. But Brigman couldn't come up with the ball, and Contreras came home with the tying run.

Colvin drove in what would prove to be the game winning run with a fielder's choice grounder, nd Ryan Lillie retired San Diego in order in the bottom of the ninth to seal the win.

Alex Fagalde (2-0) was credited with the victory, while Lillie earned his fourth save of the year.

The Highlanders return home this weekend for a three-game Big West Conference series vs. Long Beach State.
