Fullerton—The UC Riverside Softball Team dropped both games of their 2016 conference opening double header at Cal State Fullerton Saturday.
UC Riverside 1, Cal State Fullerton 9
In the first game they were outscored, 9-1, in six innings.
The Titans got on the board in the bottom of the first with a solo homerun. The Highlanders would answer in the top of third, when Maddie Richard doubled with two outs and came in to score on Haley Harris' single to left field to tie the game.
In the bottom of the third, they hosts got a two-run homer from reigning Big West Player of the Week Alexis Gonzalez. They also brought two more across in the bottom of the fourth on two hits and a Highlander throwing error to take a 5-1 lead.
Cal State Fullerton scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to end the game via the eight run mercy rule.
UC Riverside 1, Cal State Fullerton 2
In the second game of the day, the Highlanders lost a pitchers duel, 2-1.
As in the first game, Cal State Fullerton got on the board in the bottom of the first inning. The lead off hitter singled, and was brought in when the following hitter doubled to right center. They would plate another on a fielding error by Tayler Misfeldt with a runner on third with two out. Misfeldt would get out the inning allowing two runs, one earned on three hits.
In the circle for the Titans was Sydney Golden, who held the Highlanders scoreless until the top of the fourth inning, when Jenna Curtan doubled to right center with two out and came around to score on a Chelsey Holley single and a Titan throwing error.
Misfeldt would settle in and allow just four hits over her final six innings in the circle, but UCR was unable to score as Golden held the Highlanders just two hits over the final two frames to keep the one-run lead in tact.
Reigning Big West Pitcher of the Week, Desiree Ybarra struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh, earning her first save of the season and securing Golden her 11th victory in 2016. Misfeldt (14-7) was saddled with the loss after going seven innings, allowing two runs, one earned
The clubs will closeout the three game series at noon Sunday.
