Softball Falls, 2-0, To CSUN In Series Finale On Senior Day

RiversideIn the final home game of the 2016 season, the UC Riverside Softball team was defeated by CSUN, 2-0. Before the game, UCR seniors Erika Campbell, Courtnie, Courtnie Ploesch, and Natalie Sanchez were honored in a ceremony by the team, friends and family.

The Matadors victory in the series finale earned them a sweep of the Highlanders and sole possession of second place in the Big West.

Tayler Misfeldt and CSUN's Daphne Pofek faced off for the third time and kept the game scoreless through six innings, as both got timely plays from their respective defenses.

In the top of the third with two out and a runner on second, Jenna Curtan ran down a fly ball in right center to end the threat. CSUN had runners on second and third with one out in the top of the fourth, when Misfeldt got Pofek and Tara Kliebenstein, both of whom homered in game one of the series, to fly out to end the inning.

Maddy Richard singled down the left field line to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning and stole second with Haley Harris at the plate. Harris then singled and advanced to second on a failed attempt to get Richard at third. After a pop out, Curtan laid down a bunt in a squeeze play, but the CSUN catcher Karlie Habitz fielded the bunt before it could get down the third base line and tagged out Richard.

The Matadors loaded the bases in the top of sixth with two out, when Katie Hooper drove a 2-2 pitch in the air towards the gap in left center, but senior Courtnie Ploesch hustled over to make the catch against the wall in left center to keep the game scoreless.

In the top of seventh the Matadors' lead off hitter reached on an error and moved to second on a bunt single down the third base line. Tayler Glover then sacrificed the runners over to second and third with one out. The next hitter a grounder to shortstop Hannah Rodriguez, who threw home to get the runner, and the catcher stepped on the plate and threw to first in an attempt to get the runner, who was safe. The CSUN runner scored from third for the game's first run. Habitz then singled to left field, bringing in a second run before in the end of the inning.

Chelsey Holley led off the bottom of the seventh with a single up the middle, but the Highlanders made outs on their next three at bats to end the game. Misfeldt's complete-game six-hitter would results in a loss, as she was bested by Pofek's complete-game five-hit shutout.

The UCR Softball team will be on the road at Long Beach State for a three-game weekend series May 7-8.
