Richard Wins Batting Title, Softball Ends Record Breaking Season With 1-0 Loss At Cal Poly

San Luis Obispo-The UC Riverside Softball historic 2016 season came to an end Saturday with a, 1-0, 10 inning loss at Cal Poly.

Tayler Misfledt and Cal Poly's Sierra Hyland put in spectacular pitching performances in their final game in the circle this season. Misfeldt allowed just five hits in the first seven innings of the game, while holding the Mustangs scoreless. Hyland also allowed just five hits to the Highlanders, one of which was to Maddy Richard who secured the Big West batting title.

UC Riverside's best scoring chance came in the top of the seventh inning, when they led off the inning with hits from Jenna Curtan and Chelsey Holley. Natalie Sanchez then stepped to plate and singled to left field, Curtan, who is third in the Big West in stolen bases, tried to score from second but was called out at the plate.

In the bottom of the ninth, Misfeldt worked out of a one out bases loaded jam, getting a fly out and groundout to the extend the game. In the top of the 10th, the Highlanders failed to get the leadoff hitter to second after a single to start the inning. The Mustangs Stephanie Heyward got leadoff single in the bottom of the 10th. After a pair of fly outs, West hit a bloop single to right field and it was misplayed on the bounce, which allowed Heyward to come in to score the winning run.

UC Riverside concluded a historic second straight 30 plus win season and Maddy Richard won the conference batting title with a .452 average-the fourth highest in Big West history. The Highlanders had an 11-game winning streak just during non-conference play, the longest streak since joining the Big West and hit .300 as a team this season, eclipsing last year's previous high of .285.
